On My Radar

I am pretty sad to see October end tomorrow. This might have been my favorite month of all time. It didn’t go as planned at all (starting with our failed trip to Bermuda), but I have to say it has been pretty incredible. My parents visited, we picked so many apples, Gar and I took a weekend trip to the Catskills….
And because I’m an overachiever. I’m squeezing in another weekend trip to Vermont with my friend Victoria!
Have I mentioned how much I’m loving Connecticut 😉 I feel like I have a new lease on life. The leaves have been especially inspiring the past couple of weeks. I wish they were like this year round!
Here’s what has been on my radar this week:
Every time an Adele song comes on the radio I wonder if she is going to have a new album… or even just a new song. And it’s here! I can’t wait! This interview she did is really great; it’s a little different than typical celebrity interviews which is why I think it stands out. What an incredibly talented artist. I’m glad she’s back to making music but I’m also happy to hear that she took the time as a mom with her son.
My mom has been getting some of her older jewelry reset lately. She gave my sister and I each a diamond from a necklace my dad had given her years ago. My sister had a ring made (she’s wearing it in this Instagram!) and I still am deciding on what to do with mine. I randomly found this website on Pinterest and they beautifully reset jewelry. I spent too much time to admit looking at the before/afters! I love that they will even take earrings and make a ring… so many options and they’re all unique and yours!
Wow. Brain surgeons recently conducted a groundbreaking surgery LIVE on TV with the help of National Geographic. And it was successful! The Parkinson’s patient’s hand tremor disappeared. The patient will have to undergo more surgery, but I’d say this was pretty remarkable stuff.
FIVE // The Royal We Movie Adaptation
I read The Royal We this spring and was hoping it would get made into a movie the whole time I read it. As if a movie isn’t exciting enough… Lauren Graham and Mae Whitman (the duo played mother/daughter on the show Parenthood) are committed to the project. Yes!!!!

Any fun Halloween plans

xoxo

I read that interview on Adele earlier this week and hung on her every word. I feel like she's so different in the best way possible – not to mention a breath of fresh air. I'm a little freaked out by how fast time is moving and I've been trying to tell myself to enjoy every bit of each day, even the mundane parts I tend to wish away. Hope you have a great weekend, Carly!

I'm so glad you are loving Connecticut! I am a lifelong resident except for going to college in Virginia. I live closer to Hartford though. I have been such a shutterbug lately with all of the fall color.

On My Radar

This week was pretty centered around the blizzard that wasn’t was! Garrett and I ended up having to come home from our ski trip early and my trip to visit my friend Alison was canceled because the trains were done. The good thing is that the city wasn’t hit that hard at all… and we stocked up on some great (junk food) groceries.
Picking up my little muffin right when we got back to the city. Teddy loves the snow. I can hardly keep up with him, he just wants to DASH through the snow banks. I love how the flakes stick to his curls.
We woke up and realized the whole blizzard thing was a bust… but Garrett and I still embraced the snow day, as did most of the city. Starting with cinnamon rolls (the canned kind, aka the best kind).
I convinced Garrett to walk through Central Park and it was just too fun. It seemed like everyone had the day off from work and decided to spend it in the exact same way: playing in the park! Want an instant smile? Watch hundreds of adorable kids sledding.
… now what’s been on my radar:
ONE // Dove Curl Love
Guys…. I think I’m going to have to embrace my curls now. A reader emailed this video to me and I was crying by the end. I mean, truly bawling. I’ve always wished my hair was nice and straight right out of the shower. One of the little girls I babysit for has the curliest hair; I remember telling her one day, “I have curly hair too!” She replied, “It doesn’t look curly…” Which was try, because I had straightened it! Let’s see how this curl thing goes.
TWO // Paragon Sports
Paragon Sports is this incredible multi-story retail store with EVERYTHING sports related. To be honest, I think Garrett and I might just be addicted to shopping there. It’s overwhelmingly awesome. They carry everything and anything sports related. I’ve been having too much fun skiing (who am I?!), so we went this week and I got fitted for ski boots!!! The fit on a ski boot is imperative and they take their time at Paragon ensuring that you’re in the best boot possible. Highly recommend Paragon Sports… even for just a fun spin through the store.
THREE // Humans of New York
I love Humans of New York. But this has taken it to a new level. Brandon featured 13 year old Vidal as one of the subjects for his website. He normally asks a prompt to get an inspiring, funny, or thought provoking story for the caption. Vidal mentioned that his principal had influenced his life in a positive way… and an absolute movement happened. HONY readers and supporters have raised over ONE MILLION dollars to send the scholars to visit Harvard, create summer programs, and initiate a scholarship fund. Incredible. Definitely worth going through the various HONY posts to see the entire storyline unfold… I have a feeling this is still just the beginning.
FOUR // Financial Security
Something that’s been on my mind a lot is #money. I’ve set some pretty high standards for myself in terms of saving goals for 2015 and January has been a little bit of a struggle mentally. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or the Universe telling me something, but I’ve been stumbling on pieces and having articles shared with me about finances/money lately. I feel like money is such a taboo thing, so it’s refreshing to see it being brought to light in a straightforward way. Two particularly interesting reads: “The Life Behind the Lifestyle Blog” and “Why You Should Tell Your Kids How Much You Make.”
This is me. Every day. Slipping on the sidewalks! But not nearly as cute as this dog!

Anything fun on your schedule this weekend?

Good to hear you got fitted for ski boots! I've been skiing my whole life but only recently saw a proper boot fitter and I wish someone had encouraged me to do that sooner. Comfortable feet will change your whole experience with the sport, and even help you improve faster!

Oh, and Google "the curly girl method": it's a series of techniques for washing, setting and styling your naturally curly/wavy hair, and it's a total game changer–curls and waves don't have to be dry and frizzy!

I love that curls video! One of my goals for the year was to embrace my natural hair & face too, since my hair is naturally curly/wavy. This video may have been just what I needed to push through & embrace it for the whole world to see!
Also, I can't wait to read those articles you posted under money-getting married in May is more expensive than I could have ever thought so saving any money I can is imperative!

Carly,

LOVED the two articles you posted. I absolutely grew up in a home where money was taboo and instead of teaching me how not to make financial mistakes I grew up completely not understanding money. I used to be quite afraid of bills and debt and having enough. I have definitely taught myself a lot and am thankful to my amazing fiance for teaching me how to be a bit more money savvy.

I really gotta say as a young professional woman I have found some really great things on your blog. Love it and I am so inspired by you!

Thanks!

Coincidentally, I've been wearing my hair natural 4-5x a week! It's not beautiful curly, but with a little bit of mousse, it's close!

I read that HONY post and it made me cry how much the principal affected her scholars in such a positive light! I heard they raised enough money through the donations to send their scholars to Harvard every year for the next then years and they raised enough money for a few years of summer programs for the kids too. I'm so glad HONY was able to touch a community is such an awesome way!

On My Radar

The best part about three day weekends that end with a Monday? You get a four day week! I’ve been trying to squish in everything during four days… and majorly wishing Memorial Day weekend could have lasted forever. So… more photos 😉
Wearing: Lilly Pulitzer Sweater (the cutest anchor on it!) // Old Lilly Shorts (similar) // Kate Spade Bag (c/o) // Wayfarers
#melting
Here’s what has been on my radar this week:

ONE // Evolution of Miley Cyrus
I love Miley’s music. Every song. All the way back to her Hannah Montana days. (“The Climb” is one of my favorite songs!) This video has to be one of the best “evolution of” videos out there– the way the songs have changed throughout the years is great… each one better than the next it seems. Also, weird side-note, it was like walking down memory lane. The songs would bring me back to specific moments/events in high school and college.
TWO // The Woman Who Wasn’t There

It seems like I have watched every single documentary on Netflix and Hulu Plus. For some reason this one hadn’t popped up until this week. Obviously, it went straight to the top of the queue. I find watching 9/11 footage really difficult, but other than that part, it’s such an intriguing documentary. Definitely a must-see!

THREE // Summer Reading Books
I just went to the bookstore to pick up a few books for summer reading. I’ve been slacking terribly on my reading recently. (Getting through the second half of The Goldfinch has been more than a challenge.) I picked up: Wild, The Opposite of Loneliness, Is Everytone Hanging Out Without Me?, and The Art of Thinking Clearly. I’m dying to know what’s on your reading list for the summer… anything good? While I was searching, I was thinking about that one summer a few years back when everyone was reading The Help. Is there one of those “everyone is reading” books out there right now?!
FOUR // BaubleBar Sale
My favorite monogram necklace from BaubleBar is on sale right now… I wear mine nearly every day and only take it off when I’m showering. Definitely down to pennies/use!
Having managed social media accounts for a growing company and obviously managing my own, I know there is some science and some art behind it. I personally don’t schedule tweets, but at my old job we did… and I would have nightmares (literally nightmares) where some sort of catastrophe was going on and I couldn’t access HootSuite to pause the tweets. Reading about how major news organizations manage their social channels is fascinating. There’s no one real “right” way to do it globally, but there are absolutely some best practices out there!
What’s on your radar this week? Any fun weekend plans coming up?

Mindy is SO funny. You'll love her book. Also, check out her Harvard Law grad speech if you haven't seen it already.

Oh goodness.
Miley Cyrus wrote the story of my life…everything she ever talked/sang about I could totally relate to her. I know she has kind of gone a little crazy but the fact that she just doesn't care what people think about her and she is doing what makes her happy and that's all that matters after all! Even though I secretly miss the old Miley!

I've been wanting to read the Goldfinch but I've heard that a lot of people struggle to get through the second half. I think The Fault in Our Stars is definitely the book to read right now. I read it in one weekend because it was just that good and I wanted to finish it before the movie came out!

Mindy's book was so funny and so relatable! I am reading Wild right now (a stranger was passing copies out in downtown Boston last month), but my favorite recent read is Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore

I am currently reading "Sisterland" by Curtis Sittenfeld. (I love her first two books!) I recently downloaded "The Fault in Our Stars" and "The Husband's Secret" for my Kindle, but I certainly need more summer, light reads to add to the list.

Thanks for sharing what's on your radar. I have been slacking with my summer reading as well, but I am waiting to snag a copy of The Fault in Our Stars. As a thyroid cancer survivor it is on my must read (and probably see!) list.

Happy Weekend!

I just finished reading three books..
Cut me loose– a memoir about an ultra-orthodox Jew girl who leaves her religion — the book was soooo good read it in a day.
Hollow City the second peculiar children novel
And the good luck of right now– it's by the same author from silver linings playbook.

You should really check them out. They're pretty good, I just ordered the art of thinking clearly looks like a good read and opposite of lonlieness, looks inspiring.

You NEED to read "All the Light We Cannot See", a novel by Anthony Doerr that just came out this year. Truly amazing, can't recommend enough!! 🙂

I just finished 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult…you cannot put it down. It is a bit hard to read as it is about a school shooting but I highly suggest it.

I recently went on a library spree and checked out basically every history book by Paul Johnson. I love history and his books are so interesting (try "Creators" if you're the artistic type!) and (bonus) he also seems to refer to Jane Austen about every twenty pages, no matter the subject, which I kind of love. I don't do much light reading, but last year at the beach I voraciously read "Paris, My Sweet." Mostly so that I could fantasize about scooting around Paris on a "velib" as she calls them, eating sweets every day.

The book by Mindy Kaling is called "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without me?". It's "everyone" not "everytone". Sorry it is really bothering me that you can't get the title of that book correct.

Is Everytone Hanging Out Without Me? is one of my favorite books. It was the one that got me in to autobiographies last summer because it was just so fun and cute. Reading celebrity autobiographies is great because it shows you that they struggle to get to the top, it wasn't as easy as it always seems. And I love seeing the personality behind the writing. Check out Tina Fey's Bossy
Pants too if you haven't already. I also have been posting a Summer Book Club series on my blog if you're looking for some new reads and some discussion. I recently posted about Divergent.

Just finished Coming Clean by Kimberly Rae Miller and it is not exactly a light summer read, but it was heartfelt, and I adored it! Highly recommend!
